What counts as a dental emergency?
- Severe, persistent toothache
- Knocked-out tooth (avulsion) — see a dentist within 30 minutes if possible
- Cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth with pain or bleeding
- Lost filling or crown causing pain
- Abscess or swelling in the gums or face
- Bleeding that won't stop after extraction or trauma
- Dental injury from sports or an accident
When to go to the ER instead
If the dental emergency involves uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a fractured jaw, severe facial swelling, or trauma that may have caused a concussion, go to the emergency room or call 911. ER staff can stabilize you and refer you to a dentist or oral surgeon.
